Hormone health with Monica Grohne, founder and CEO of Marea

Monica Grohne is on a personal mission to help support as many menstruators as possible in feeling free from their period symptoms, which inspired her to launch Marea.

After 17 years of struggling, Monica received a Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) diagnosis in 2016. This led her to dive deep into hormone and menstrual health, receiving a certificate in women’s hormone health coaching and launching her own menstrual wellness and nutrition brand, Marea, in 2020.

Monica shares her hormone knowledge below.

Q. What are some causes of hormone imbalance?

A. Here are a few:

Endocrine disruptors: Chemicals in our every day household products and those used as pesticides on food items have been linked to hormone imbalance, metabolic dysfunction, and more.

Synthetic birth control: It has been shown that several key nutrients are depleted by synthetic birth controls including: folic acid, vitamins B2, B6, B12, vitamin C and E and the minerals magnesium, selenium, and zinc.

Stress: Stress has a profoundly negative effect on the body's nutrient stores, leaving us feeling depleted and lacking in energy. As well as rapidly using up essential nutrients as part of the body's stress response, stress can also prevent the body from absorbing essential nutrients.

Gut health dysfunction: Sugar, dairy, and gluten, staples in many diets, can affect the microbiome and prevent your body from absorbing nutrients you need.

Caffeine: Always reaching for an afternoon cappuccino to get through your day? You're definitely not alone, but caffeine can cause nutrient depletion of important nutrients, like vitamin B6, and interfere with nutrient absorption of essential minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, and B vitamins.

Q. What are some signs that your hormones are out of balance?

A. Symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, cramps, bloating, and general PMS.

Q. How can you begin to balance your hormones naturally?

A. Micronutrient replenishment, sleep hygiene, eating enough, stress management — I did an entire free workshop on healthy habits for hormone balance for those who want to learn more.

Q. What are some Marea products that can help?

A. PMS Elixir: A drinkable multivitamin made specifically for women with 15 essential micronutrients needed to support healthy hormone balance. It helps to replenish and support micronutrient needs for healthy hormone balance. Plus, it's also available in convenient travel packs.
