VIO2: The go-to for mouth taping
If you've spent time on the health and wellness side of social media, you've probably heard about mouth taping. If you haven't, yes — it's exactly what it sounds like.
The goal of mouth taping is to get you to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth, and it's said to have a host of benefits from improved sleep, better oral health, and more.
VIO2 specializes in comfortable, unscented mouth tapes to sleep in.
In March 2020 when the COVID lockdown began, Dr. Vincent Ip and his wife, Lindsey, were forced to shutter their functional dentistry offices for three months. Like many others, they found themselves suddenly with time on their hands.
VIO2 was born out of their shared passion to help more people live a better life.
Their practice focus is how oral health affects the whole body, not just teeth. Dr. Ip specializes in treating airway disorders and helping people rejuvenate their lives by practicing better oral health. Dr. Ip recommended mouth taping as part of his proprietary sleep protocol for years to professional athletes and regular patients alike.
Coming from a design and marketing background, Lindsey knew the only mouth tape on the market was medical feeling, covered the whole mouth, and felt scary. She wanted to create something that made mouth taping more approachable, comfortable, and could be used with her skincare routine.
Their experience working in healthcare showed them not everyone has access to care so they set out to create something that was also affordable.
VIO2 mouth tape gently promotes nasal breathing, day or night. Whether you are looking to better your sleep, bolster immunity or improve oral health: the Vital Interchange of Oxygen is key.
We chatted with Lindsey to learn more about the benefits and how to integrate it into your routine.
What is the purpose of mouth taping?
Mouth taping (with the right product, no full coverage) can help to gently train the body to breathe through the nose, especially during sleep.
Why is breathing through your nose essential — and why is mouth-breathing harmful?
Your nose is your body's natural filter. Your body is only meant to breathe through the nose, when you breathe through the mouth your body misses the natural filtration system available to it.
There are a host of reasons one should want to always nasal breathe but here are a few: better oral health, improved lung function, reduced snoring, and it's proven to reduce stress and anxiety.
Any advice for those interested in trying, but feel nervous?
I always recommend anyone that is interested but nervous to start taping during the day while they are answering emails, cooking, or watching TV. After a while you don't even notice it.
Now, I can't sleep without it — it's like a little drug-free clue to my body that it's time for sleep.
