Adaptogens for self care with Sarah Polansky, Founder of Prismatic Plants
Taking care of ourselves is so important. There are so many things we can add to our routines and rituals to enhance our day-to-day. One of the ways we can do that is through incorpotaing adaptogens. Prismatic Plants uses adaptogen CBD healing elixirs, tinctures, and topicals to help you find your daily zen from sleep support to anxiety relief.
The seed of Prismatic Plants first started in 2017 when Founder, Sarah Polansky, saw a huge need in the industry for a cannabis company focused on:
A. Women
B. Medicinal healing using plants (not just cannabis)
C. A brand that would feel more approachable to newbies in the industry
"Personally, I had been struggling with severe chronic health issues in part due to a stressful work life, and I found great healing from this plant and plant medicine in general," says Sarah. "I felt awakened and passionate about changing courses with my career to step into the wild west of the canna industry in the hopes of helping other people not only find relief, but achieve deep, systemic healing."
She quit her job and threw everything into building the company in July 2018, launching almost a year later — and they've been rocking ever since.
Sarah goes over incorporating adaptogens in your self care routine and how they help.
Q. What are adaptogens?
A. Adaptogens are a truly special classification of a plant. The term adaptogen was given because these plants are said to help your body ‘adapt’ to stressors it comes in contact with when taken regularly. Each adaptogen has its own unique way of operating in the body and different focuses for the body.
Some adaptogens are very energizing, like ginseng. And some are more calming, like ashwagandha. For a plant, herb, or mushroom to be classified as an adaptogen, they must pass the following three rules:
1. An adaptogen must have a non-specific activity. It’s not so much a targeted treatment but more like a shield that the body can build up for resilience against stressors (environmental, health, diet, chemicals, etc.)
2. An adaptogen must have a normalizing influence, meaning it equalizes imbalances found in the body. This can mean going up for some while down for others.
3. And most importantly, an adaptogen must do no harm.
In our Good Day and Good Night formulas we use several adaptogens, in addition to cannabinoids, to help the body heal. This multi-plant approach means we are healing multiple bodily systems, the HPA-Axis and the Endocannabinoid system.
Q. How are adaptogens used in self care?
A. From tinctures to teas to face cream to shampoo, adaptogens have become incorporated into all sorts of bodily goods. We like to take our adaptogens internally given stress is ever present and we need all the help we can get to normalize our stress hormones. Reishi or ‘Mushroom of Immortality’, can be especially useful for bolstering the immune system when someone is feeling depleted (also found in our Good Night tincture). If you see this ingredient in a topical product (lotion, serums, etc.) it won’t impart these benefits on your health.
Looking to dip your toe in the water of adaptogens but don’t know where to start? I’d go with reishi since its well tolerated by most people and has a bland taste. Plus, I just love the fact that it’s the perfect workhorse for a run down immune system (or even those that want to stave away future illnesses) and in the era of pandemics, this is a huge need!
