5 bladder tips from a Pelvic PT

Ever wondered if you're going too much — or not enough? Dr. Amaya Liles PT, DPT gives us five helpful tips for optimal bladder health and function.

1. Roll over and go back to sleep if you wake up in the middle of the night to pee. If you wake up again, calmly get up and go to the rest room. Normal is getting up 0-1 time (even in pregnancy).

2. Drink at least 64 oz. of water for your body to complete its normal functions.

3. Don’t push your pee out. Take deep breaths into your belly to relax your pelvic floor and allow urine to pass.

4. Do not go to the bathroom just in case. Our bladder and brain are very easily trained through our behaviors. This is why you have the urge bathroom every time you get ready to leave the house even when you know you just went.

5. If you drink water throughout the night and that is why you get up to pee, try keeping a tumbler of ice on your bedside table. It is enough to quench the desert that is your mouth, but not enough to actually fill your bladder.
