Embracing the cold: All about cryotherapy with Icebox Columbia
Icebox Columbia specializes in cold therapy and incorporates cold into as many areas of the business as possible. In just three minutes, a whole body cryotherapy session at Icebox can serve as a natural, non-invasive form of healing used both for preventative care and to treat existing conditions.
Studio Manager, Kaylea Fisher, tells us more about the benefits and how to brace yourself for the cold to reap the benefits.
The details on whole body cryotherapy
Whole Body Cryotherapy is when you are exposed to extremely cold temperatures for a short amount of time.
The basic principle of whole-body cryotherapy is that extremely cold temperatures can increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the body’s natural
healing processes.
When you enter the Icebox, your body is exposed to temperatures as low as -200 F to -256 F for three minutes. This sudden drop in temperature triggers a natural response from your body, as it tries to protect itself from the extreme cold.
The science behind it
During whole-body cryotherapy treatment, your body experiences vasoconstriction and endorphin release.
When you enter the Icebox, blood vessels constrict to move warmer blood from your limbs into the core of your body for extra warmth and protection. Once the treatment is over and you exit the Icebox, your body experiences contrast therapy and those same veins
dilate again as fresh oxygenated blood rushes back out.
This sudden rush of oxygenated blood can help reduce inflammation and accelerate the healing process.
